You and the Cost of Newborn Diapers
I always thought that newborn diapers were more cost efficient than the other sizes, because you got so many more diapers per package. (For those of you who haven’t had a baby, the way diaper packages work is that the larger the size of the diaper, the less you get per package, even though it’s the same price.) Of course, those savings mean nothing if you go through a lot of diapers, which is exactly what we were doing.
My little angel was was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through more diapers than I thought possible for something so small. Actually, it wasn’t just the newborn diapers - we were going through everything. This baby was 1/15 my size, and creating twice as much laundry.
Of course, I knew before we even decided to have the baby that it would be expensive. The costs I associated with having a baby were a little different, and further away, things like braces and university. I mean, just how much could this little bundle of joy cost? A whole lot, as it turns out.
So now, I’ve turned into that guy. You know, the guy that clips coupons, but not only for newborn diapers, but for other things as well, anything that will help us save money. What happened to me? Now I get all my coupon organized and in an envelope, and go do the shopping.
Another thing that I’m doing that I’ve never done before is actually going through the grocery store flyers and making a list. While it does save us money, the real reason I do this is not to offset the cost of buying newborn diapers. No, it’s because I’ll come home without anything if I go without a list; I’ve barely slept in three weeks and my brain isn’t functioning properly.
And then I’ll just come home with newborn diapers. Packages and packages of newborn diapers, because I know at least that we need those, even if I’ve forgotten everything else we need. So I make my list, and I’ve even gone so far as to actually wait for the flyers to be delivered every week. I go through the flyers, one by one, and make up my list of what I need to get by store so that I know I’m getting all the best deals.
Still, I’m trying to commit every last moment to memory, depsite the lack of sleep and extra strains on the pocketbook. Because I know in a few short years (or heck, even a few months from now) I’ll come across one of those newborn diapers and be amazed that my child was ever small enough to fit into them. I will hang on to each moment I have with my baby now, while my little child is small enough to still fit into those teeny-tiny newborn diapers.
